Newbery Book Award Reading Challenge

As an avid reader of many different books over the years and strong advocate for reading; I felt I wanted to challenge myself with a new reading goal. As a teacher of fourth grade students, I often feel I know many good books to recommend for girls, but not so much for boys.

Thanks to my Aunt Pam (who retired from teaching 5th grade a few years ago), I inherited a HUGE stash of GREAT books. Many of these books were the Newbery Award winners from various years.

My challenge is this- to read every single Newbery Award winning book and/or Honor book. I won't be reading them in any particular order, but hope to one day have read them all.

I have started with a Newbery  Honor Book from 1979 (the year I was born) - The Great Gilly Hopkins, by Katherine Paterson. This was the Honor book (not the winner) for that year. The winner for 1979 was The Westing Game, by Ellen Raskin (which is next on my list).

I plan to blog about each book as I finish it with a short summary (that doesn't give away the ending) and my thoughts about the book.

I hope you will find that you want to rush off to the nearest library (or download it onto your Kindle-as I plan to do after Christmas) to read my latest book. (I THINK I am getting a Kindle..)

If anyone wants to join me in this challenge feel free to let me know and we can have a virtual book club! :-)

All Boxed Up

Very fun! I am trying to do a similar thing. The Great Gilly Hopkins book is delightful. I hope you enjoy it.

What a great idea! I'd love to read along if you'll e-mail me the next book you're reading! Sounds fun!

Oh, and my biscuit recipe is just the recipe on the side of a bisquick box! Really, they turn out pretty good! And it's sort of homemade! :)

Also, you're right that Flanna and Ava would get along! Maybe one day we'll live that way again.
