You may see the title to this post and wonder what in the world I am talking about? You may be thinking..Amber...blessed with two beautiful, smart, and lovable kids is claiming infertility problems...well yes....and here is my story.
As you know I had Weldon (2000) and Ava (2006) pre-divorce with my first husband, Mickey. I got pregnant with Weldon totally out of the blue and came off BCP and got pregnant with Ava right away. Of course, I now had my boy and my girl and I thought I was done. However, that was pre-divorce and pre-meeting my husband Jerry. So..fast forward...
Now we have been married a year and a half. I'm 31 and not getting any younger. He's 34 and not getting any younger either, and has no biological children of his own. We decided not long after we got married (last November) that I would go off BCP and just let it happen. I thought to myself- I'll be pregnant by Christmas.....well Christmas came and went and still no period....
March came and went and still no period since going off BCP in November...so I figured something was wrong and I went to my GYN. She starts a period with provera and I have some blood work done and she feels like I have PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome)...Basically my insulin doesn't do it's job and my body produces too many androgens (male hormones) and basically my body is out of whack! Here is an official definition of it..
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a very common hormonal disorder and the most common cause of ovulatory-based infertility in reproductive-aged women, diagnosed in approximately 5 to 10 percent of women in this age group according to most statistics. PCOS occurs with equal frequency across racial and ethnic groups.
So...long story short...I felt like my GYN and Family PCP were not active enough in treating it and since I was also born with hypothyroidism (my thyroid does not produce the hormones it should)...I inquired with my endocrinologist (thyroid doctor) about what I should do. At this point I am most concerned about getting my periods regular and my "almost" diabetes in control than I am about pregnancy, but that too is important to me...
So my endocrinologist at Emory suggest that I see a reproductive endocrinologist (a doctor who specializes in helping women with endocrine problems who can't get pregnant). So that brings me to today where I saw Dr. Spencer at Emory Downtown ATL. After a long meeting with her, she sent me for more blood test (9 viles were drawn) and put me back on Metformin to help get the insulin (blood sugar) problem, and wants to force another period (provera) so that I can have more blood work and an ultra sound done to verify the PCOS diagnosis for sure...
So..that is where I am now...do I feel a tad overwhelmed? Yes!!! Do I feel frustrated that my weight is the cause of all this even though "this" is also the cause of why I can't lose weight..YES!! Am I sad that I can't get pregnant right now? Not really...and do you know why???
My husband looked me in the eye (after being with me through the whole appointment and blood work) and said...
"Amber- I don't care if you are big or skinny, if you have a baby or don't have a baby....I still love you and I just want you to be OKAY!" -
What a wonderful man...he may not ever know how much it meant to me to hear that.
So friends...join me on my journey as I blog from time to time about this issue and please feel free to share your stories.
Blessings,
Amber
